Nairobi court awards students Ksh5 million

A Nairobi court has awarded Ksh4 million to five former students of Kenyatta University (KU) for unlawful suspension from the institution in 2001.

The former students, Vincent ole Lempaa, Wahome Thuku, Charles Maina, George Nyanduro and George Otieno had proposed an award of 5 million shillings each.

But Justice Roselyn Wendo awarded each of them Ksh800 thousand stating that it was enough to compensate for damages that the students incurred when they were suspended from the University.

The former students accused the University, the then Vice Chancellor Professor George Eshiwani and the then Registrar of Academics John Shiundu of “intentionally” denying them education.

They claimed that the decision to suspend them from the entire student community amounted to a degrading punishment.

The five were suspended after they participated in a peaceful demonstration over the killing of a student in Nakuru during tribal clashes.
